Niah Swiftlets and birds nest 5
A tourist's view to Niah Caves.Haven't seen a cave nests and swiftlets before? Niah Caves is a good place for you to explore ...
Niah Swiftlets and birds nest 6
Located 2-3 hours drive from Miri or Bintulu, Niah Cave in Sarawak is one of the biggest cave in the world, with human inhabitants found, traced back to 40,000 years ago. Niah National Park is also under the UNEP's Protected Areas Programme.
The Great Cave
For bird's nest and swiftlets worker, 'Niah' has been used and known as a symbol, to represent bird's nest from Sarawak. On Dec 2004, we visited Niah Caves. It's a tour to observe some of the bird's nest and swiftlets activities there, from a tourist's view.
Niah Lowland Plankwalk
From the Niah National Park headquarter, the whole trip will start with a 3Km trekking on a plankwalk through the lowland forest, to arrive at the Trader's Cave, continue to the 'Great Cave'. Optionally tourist can continue to 'Painted Cave'. This is the typical route to explore Niah Cave from a tourist's view.
Niah Trader's Cave
Trader's Cave is the first cave before others. This cave used to be the place where the buyer and the seller (colletor) of 'guano' (bird and bat excrement, used as fertiliser) and edible bird's nest conducted transactions. Of course, you will not find this activity today, so as this cave has been abandoned, leaving some of the roofless 'belian' huts and structures.

The Greate Cave is huge. There is an archaeological site beside just at the entrance to the cave. Along the plankwalk through darkness of the Great cave, you can find countless swiftlet nests attached to the wall of the cave (hardly can see up to the roof clearly with our torchlight :) ). You can take some time to try your experience and knowledge to differentiate, which are the edible one.
Niah Bamboo Pole
During the bird's nest collection season, you can see the owners of the cave working there collecting edible bird's nest. We are not fortunate enough to see such activity this trip, but we still can see some of the wooden and bamboo poles and leaders to the roof, enough for a tourist, like me.
Niah Painted Cave, from www.sarawaktourism.com
With another half-an-hour walk from the Great Cave, Painted Cave is the other National Historical Monuments declared, beside the Great Cave. You will find some prehistoric drawing on the wall.

Well, need to mention that you will need to bring some 'more powerful' torchlight for the sightseeing in the dark, especially in the Great Cave. And along the lowland plankwalk you can take your time and walking quitely, to see if you can spot some of the park's wildlifes.

Dr Written by wong on 2006-05-24 18:21:42articles posted in the internet should be to encourage and give out, sharing information with other enthusiasts. After all, the world is big enough to cater for selfish people with small brains, and even that, there is plenty of room for that. Pictures are good. Congratulations

JWW Written by Guest on 2008-10-05 22:43:02The joyous Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated on the fifteenth day ffxi gilof the eighth moon, around the time of the autumn equinox. Many referred to it simply as the "Fifteenth of the Eighth Moon". This day was also considered as a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables aoc goldand grain had been harvested by this time and food was abundant. Food offerings were placed on an altar set up in the courtyard. Apples, pears, peaches, wow goldgrapes, pomegranates, melons, oranges and pomelos might be seen. Special foods for maple story mesosthe festival included moon cakes, cooked taro and water caltrope, a type of water chestnut maplestory mesosresembling black buffalo horns. Some people insistedmaple story meso that cooked taro be included because at the time of creation, taro was the first food discovered at night in the moonlight. Of allthese foods, it could not be omitted from wow goldthe Mid-Autumn Festival. The round moon cakes, measuring about three inches in diameter and one and a half aoc goldinches in thickness, resembled Western fruitcakes in taste and consistency. These wow goldcakes were made with melon seeds, lotus seeds, almonds, minced meats, bean wow goldpaste, orange peels and lard. A golden yolk from a salted duck egg was placed at the wow goldcenter of each cake, and the golden brown crust was decorated with symbols of the festival. Traditionally, thirteen moon cakes were piled in a pyramid to symbolize the thirteen moons of a "complete year," that is, twelve moons plus one intercalary moon. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional wow goldfestivity for both the Han and minority nationalities. The custom of worshipping the moon can be traced back as far as the ancient Xia wow goldand Shang Dynasties (2000 B.C.-1066 B.C.). In the Zhou Dynasty(1066 B.C.-221 B.C.), people hold ceremonies to greet winter and worship the moon whenever the Mid-Autumn Festival sets in. It becomes very wow goldprevalent in the Tang Dynasty(618-907 A.D.) that people enjoy and worship the full moon. In the Southern Song wow goldDynasty (1127-1279 A.D.), however, people send round moon cakes to their relatives as gifts in expression of their best wishes of wow goldfamily reunion. When it becomes dark, they look up at the full silver moon or go sightseeing on lakes to celebrate the festival. Since the Ming (1368-1644 A.D. ) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911A.D.), thewow gold custom of Mid-Autumn Festival celebration becomes unprecedented popular. Together with the celebration there appear some special wow goldcustoms in different parts of the country, such as burning incense, planting Mid-Autumn trees, lighting lanterns on towers and fire dragon dances. However, the custom of playing under the moon is not so popular as it used to be nowadays, but it is not less popular to enjoy the bright silver moon. Whenever the festival sets in, people will look up at the wow goldfull silver moon, drinking wine to celebrate their happy life or thinking of their relatives and friends far from home, and extending all of their best wishes to them.
